Screw elements do the conveying, melting and mixing, but the barrel decides how much of that work you can actually run. A liner sees the same abrasive fillers as the screw, plus a temperature gradient from the heaters, plus a permanent clamping load against the flights. On filled compounds and food or feed lines, a worn barrel announces itself in a predictable order: first unstable die pressure, then lost throughput at unchanged screw speed, and finally black specks from metal-to-metal contact. Because a barrel costs far more than a screw set, the practical rule is to specify both as one wear pair and keep the liner inside tolerance.
Barrels are classified by geometry and function, and a process section is assembled from segments. The right question is not "which barrel" but "which sequence of barrels".
| Liner | Hardness | Wear | Corrosion | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrided 38CrMoAlA | HV 900-1050 | Medium | Medium | Unfilled PP, PE, ABS, general compounding |
| Bimetallic HIP Ni60 | HRC 58-62 | High | Medium | Glass and mineral filled engineering plastics |
| HIP WR13 / WR14 | HRC 60-65 | Very high | High | 30-50 percent GF, masterbatch, filled sheet |
| SAM26 / SAM39 | HRC 60-64 | Very high | High | Large diameter and petrochemical barrels, food extrusion |
| Aluminium bronze | HV 900-1100 | Medium | Very high | Halogenated FR compounds, corrosive additives |
| Stainless 316L | HRC 25-30 | Low | Very high | Puffed food, medical compounds, metal-pickup sensitive work |
A new screw in a worn barrel loses conveying efficiency at once, and a new barrel around a worn screw wears unevenly at the flight tips. Measure both: bore diameter at three positions along each section, flight outer diameter, and screw straightness, then compare with the original drawing. If bore wear exceeds roughly 0.3 to 0.5 mm on a mid-size barrel, re-lining or replacement is cheaper than the scrap you will generate. Clearance also matters: too little at the feed zone causes galling, too much weakens the melt seal and destabilises the vacuum.
Barrel temperature is a heat-balance problem, not a setpoint problem. Shear energy in the kneading zone often supplies more heat than the heaters, so cooling water flow and temperature matter as much as the controller. Keep channels de-scaled; a partly blocked bore shows up as a zone that cannot hold setpoint at high screw speed. With vacuum venting, verify the port seal and never let the port run dry of melt.
| Industry | Typical barrel arrangement | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic compounding | Feed, closed, combi, venting, 4-6 cooling zones | Watch barrels 1-2 for feed-zone wear |
| Masterbatch, high filler | Bimetallic HIP liner, short open dosing section | Inspect at every screw change |
| Food and feed | Stainless or Ni60 liner, polished bore, steam injection | Bore finish matters more than hardness |
| Petrochemical, large bore | Round split barrels, SAM26/39, 219-420 mm | Split design cuts liner downtime |
| Powder coating | SAM26 lined barrel, water cooled, ZE52-ZE80 class | Zone control prevents gel particles |
Record bore measurements at each screw change so wear shows as a trend instead of a surprise. Keep a spare section for the wear-critical position, usually the first closed barrel after the feed opening, and rotate it with a later section. Nitrided barrels can be re-honed and re-nitrided; HIP bimetallic barrels are normally re-lined. Both routes need the flange faces machined true, so plan reconditioning before wear reaches the cooling channels.
Most barrel failures are specification errors, not manufacturing errors: a nitrided liner in a 40 percent glass-filled compound, a stainless barrel on an abrasive mineral filler, or no wear allowance to measure. Send the machine model, bore diameter, filler type and loading, process temperatures and target output, and we will propose the barrel sequence and liner for that duty. Joiner Machinery builds screw elements, barrels and shafts for co-rotating twin screw extruders in Chengdu, China, to ISO 9001:2015, with replacement barrels for Berstorff, Coperion, JSW, Leistritz, Maris, Clextral and Buhler machines.
